Bread of Life

In Peru, 47.6% of the population in extreme poverty is younger than 15 years old. In view of this reality, the Peruvian Bible Society (SBP) and Urban Rural Holistic Mission (MISIUR) are joining forces to tackle the situation through a program called “THE BREAD OF LIFE”.

What is “The Bread of Life”?

It is a program designed to offer holistic help to children who live in extreme poverty.

“The Bread of Life” seeks to meet two fundamental needs in a child’s development.

  • Spiritual Need:

That children may know God through Jesus, by means of teaching and illustrated Bible portions which are age appropriate.

  • Physical Need:

To contribute to increasing the nutrition of the child by providing a daily breakfast.

What is being done?

The Peruvian Bible Society and MISIUR have been carrying out this program since 1998, with the support of the United Bible Societies and the generous contribution of Christian congregations, organizations and individuals.

Over one thousand six hundred needy children in Trujillo, Ayacucho, San Martin and Lima have been included in this program. The program is currently being carried out in the deprived urban areas of Lima such as:

  • El Agustino
  • Pamplona Alta
  • Huaycan

Our aim this year is to reach 500 children. In order to achieve this, we need to distribute 120,000 cups of milk and 240,000 rolls. We can only achieve this if we receive the contribution and help of people who share the vision!

Who carries out the program?

Those who carry out the program are churches and Christian institutions with limited economic resources, “the poor working for the poor”. They are entrusted with the task of teaching the Bible lessons to the children and of finding mothers who are willing to prepare the breakfasts.

What are the results?

“…the children now know more about creation, God’s love and His wondrous deeds, thanks to the material and spiritual bread they have received along with the human warmth and affection.”

Pamela Carretero (age 7) attends the program in Cooperativa Huancayo. She never misses “the meeting”, as she calls “the Bread of Life”, despite the fact that she has to walk a kilometer each way every Saturday in order to be at the class. She also invites her friends and her mother to “the meeting”.
