Upper Loft Meditation – Matthew 5
When you read this final beatitude what stands out to you?
- Being persecuted, falsely accused, or slandered. OR…
- Being targeted because of righteousness and your relationship with Jesus.
The answer to the above may indicate what is more important to you. Is it your own personal safety and well being? Is it being well thought of and treated fairly?
The Bible clearly points out that a follower of Jesus will suffer. “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him.” (Philippians 1:29) “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12)
We are to expect hostility because of our relationship with Christ. “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (John 15:18-19)
Hear the testimony of Paul and be encouraged. “You know all about my… persecutions, sufferings – what kinds of things happened to me… Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.” (2 Timothy 3:10-11) We are called to seek His kingdom and His righteousness. That is the mandate of our journey of faith.
