Upper Loft Meditation - Psalm 32

“Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him.” - Psalm 32:10

God’s loving care is like a seatbelt. In the state of Virginia, where I live, wearing a seatbelt is required by law. It is a law for your own safety. It has been well proven that one can survive a serious car accident, if one is wearing a seatbelt.

This past week I learned of a second value for seatbelts. I was traveling a curvy mountain road in Costa Rica that was twenty percent potholes. Our van driver was very skilled and I am sure he missed one out of every five potholes. The firm seatbelt kept me from being thrashed back and forth. I was held immovable.

Life can lead us down roads with endless potholes. Sometime the road can appear smooth and straight, until we come to a curve in the road, and everything seems to change. There is a peace we can know, a confidence we can have when we encounter those jaw-crunching potholes of life that would send tires into early retirement.

God’s unfailing love for his people holds them immovable. Nothing can grab them out of his grasp. It is with great confidence that we can pray, “Keep me safe, O God.” Psalm 16:1. Surely, God’s unfailing love is never surprised by the potholes we face.
